Different type Of servers used for Webhosting.

1.Shared
2.VPS
3.Dedicated
4.Co-location

Thease are the various type of servers used for web hosting. Some companies uses their own Servers others meet Datacenters for the servers. Lets go to detail about each of the above mentioned servers.

Before that we must know what is meant by data Center ?

The Web host stores all the pages of your website and makes them available to computers connected to the
Internet. The computers which store the pages are referred as Servers. The servers are placed in facilities
called Data Center or DC. Dc's will have complex network and power setups to ensure trouble free access
of the site.

data center  is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems.

Hosting services can be divided into different category as explained below:

1.Shared

Shared Hosting environment put multiple web sites on one server. All of the web sites on the shared server

use the same network connection, the same hardware resources, and the same software. This is ideal for
small sites which doesn't require resource consuming applications or doesn't require high bandwidth. This is
used by owners of small websites or resellers. Normally on such servers, server administration will be the
Webhost.

2.VPS

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It offers almost all functionality to the customer that he gets on a

Dedicated Server without assigning a dedicated hardware (Machine) to the client. VPS best suits for the
websites which requires more resources than the limit set on the shared server environment but not require
fully dedicated Servers. Also it fits for the Client who wishes to use a different platform (Like different OS)
and not concerned about resources.

3.Dedicated

In this case, the client purchases a server with the required hardware from the Webhost. The Webhost is

responsible for HW upgrade and OS installations. The client can make his own custom modifications in the
application level. In most cases the support or management will be done by the Webhost but the client too
will have root access if they opt. If the management is done by the Webhost, then that particular dedicated
server is “Managed Server”. This is ideal for high resource consuming applications.

4.Co-location

Client purchases the hardware / server instead of getting a server for a monthly lease from the DC. The

client places his server with Webhost utilizing the facilities of the DC at a charge. A DC facility includes
Bandwidth, Rack space, Power Resources etc. Since the server is owned by the client, the client needs to
bear the cost for HW upgrade and SW modifications. Other features are identical with dedicated hosting.
This is identical with a space rented to place the server.
